Kakaban island is part of the Derawan island, situated on the east side of Borneo. It’s a 774 hectares limestone island covered with dense jungle. It’s a protected and inhabited island (so no accomodation) that you can access to by paying an entrance fee of Rp 20,000.
We shared a few pictures of our time at the jellyfish lake earlier this week. Kakaban, in Indonesia, is the only place in the world where you can safely swim with 4 species of stingless jellyfish.
We thought we’d share some basic information and pictures of the jellyfish species so you can try and spot them if you go.

The Derawan Islands are a paradise for underwater lovers. They are located in Kalimantan East, the Indonesian side of Borneo, and are a great alternative to Sipadan.
The archipelago consists of 31 islands, the most important being: Derawan, Kakaban, Maratua and Sangalaki.
We’re approaching the island of Busuanga, and the colors look amazing from the plane. The sea is turquoise and the beaches covered with beautiful bleach white sand. We already know we’re gonna love the Philippines. We’re looking forward to landing and visiting Busuanga and Coron island.
That’s it, we left Sri Lanka. We’ve been travelling for a month already… it started slowly but then went by very fast. It’s time to move to our next destination! So what did we think about Sri Lanka?
We spent 2 weeks between Arugam Bay and Negombo. Here’s our view on all the places we found on the way.
After visiting the cultural triangle, the driver takes us to Green View, a hotel in the middle of the mountains in Elkaduwa, close to Kandy.
To give you a quick idea, the cultural triangle is made of 3 very important cities in Sri Lankan history. Each was the capital of Sri Lanka at some point: Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya. Yeah it took us ages to remember those names!
We stop at Dambulla on our way to the cultural triangle. The city seems pretty small and not that exciting until we get to the Royal Rock temple. Located at the top of a hill, it’s made of 5 separate caves containing 150 Buddha statues.
